The court’s directive, which will remain in effect until the final determination of a motion on notice, stems from a legal action initiated by Adejoh-Audu. He asserts that his fundamental human rights are at risk, citing serious threats to his life from the mentioned defendants. The veteran journalist, activist, and politician took legal action following altercations with Commissioner Unuoha over election matters. Unuoha publicly threatened Adejoh-Audu, prompting the legal recourse.
The genesis of the dispute lies in accusations made by Adejoh-Audu on November 29, 2023, wherein he accused the police chief of colluding with thugs to undermine the interests of the SDP in the recently conducted governorship election in Kogi.
In response, Commissioner Unuoha held a press conference the following day in Lokoja, issuing a 24-hour ultimatum for Adejoh-Audu to substantiate his claims or face consequences. The SDP spokesperson, in turn, presented a 17-paragraph document justifying his allegations.
In an ex-parte application heard by Justice Hamza Muazu at the FCT High Court, Adejoh-Audu’s lawyer, O. U. Salifu, secured the restraining order against the security agents. The order prohibits the arrest or interference with the liberty of the applicant by the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the DSS, the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, and the State Director of DSS.
The court has scheduled the hearing of the motion on notice for December 18, 2023, allowing for further examination of the legal aspects of the case.
