The Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has urged the Committee members investigating the disbursement of N30 trillion “Ways and Means” obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over the past decade to conduct a thorough inquiry and hold all involved parties accountable. Speaking during the inauguration of the 17-member ad-hoc Committee in Abuja on Monday, Akpabio emphasized the importance of a comprehensive investigation into the substantial N30 trillion allocated as a loan to the Federal Government during the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Akpabio instructed the Committee, led by Senator Jibrin Isah, APC, Kogi East, to dedicate six weeks to the investigation. He emphasized the need for members to prioritize national interest over personal and partisan concerns while approaching their responsibilities with balance, dedication, and impartiality.

Given the sensitivity of the inquiry, Akpabio stressed the importance of constant engagement with relevant stakeholders and consultants, maintaining open communication with both the executive and the public. He cautioned against disclosing any aspect of the report until the investigation is complete.

The Committee, tasked with probing the N30 trillion ‘Ways and Means,’ includes Senators Asuquo Ekpenyong, Mohammed Tahir Monguno, Victor Umeh, Olamilekan Adeola, Sani Musa, Aliyu Wadada, Abdul Ningi, and Ipalibo Banigo Harry.

Akpabio emphasized the significance of ‘Ways and Means,’ describing it as an overdraft taken directly from the CBN to address the nation’s contingency needs. He highlighted the necessity of ratification by the parliament for such loans or advances, emphasizing their purpose in catering for short-term or emergency financing to fund delayed government cash receipts due to fiscal deficits.

In his address, Akpabio underscored the committee’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance. He urged members to conduct a meticulous inquiry, leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of truth. He emphasized collaboration, cooperation, and maintaining confidentiality in handling sensitive information gathered during the investigation.

Akpabio concluded by expressing gratitude to the committee members for their dedication and commitment to the nation. He pledged his full support for the committee’s objectives, calling for adherence to values of transparency, integrity, and accountability in managing ‘Ways and Means’ in Nigeria.
