The committee behind the protest, based at Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, Lagos, declared a three-day mourning period for those killed during the ongoing demonstrations against poor governance. Originally intended to last ten days, the protest has reached its ninth day as of Friday.
Amnesty International has reported that Nigerian security forces killed at least 21 protesters amid a week of demonstrations over economic difficulties.
At the symposium, Comrade Hassan Taiwo, a member of the committee and National Spokesperson for the Youth Rights Campaign, emphasized the need for immediate action, noting that over 40 lives have been lost nationwide. “We are demanding the sacking of the Inspector General of Police,” Taiwo declared.
Following the symposium, a candlelight procession organized by the Campaign for Democracy and Human Rights (CDHR) is set to begin in Alausa. The ongoing protests have resulted in significant loss of life and property in various states.
