Nwafor expressed concern over instances where politicians boast about influencing judicial outcomes through their spouses, citing a case where a politician claimed to have secured favorable judgments for colleagues via his wife’s judicial position. She argued that corruption in the judiciary is a reflection of broader societal issues and not just a result of holding a political office.

“The judiciary should remain independent and should not be intertwined with political figures,” Nwafor said. “It’s not about becoming corrupt because of the position but because corruption has become a widespread issue.”

She further criticized the lack of accountability in both personal and professional spheres and suggested that a law should be enacted to prevent a prominent politician’s spouse from assuming a judicial role. “If a prominent politician’s spouse becomes a judge, it should be prohibited,” she stated. “We need to regulate this to ensure fairness and integrity in our judiciary.”

Nwafor’s remarks were partly inspired by a statement made by Adamu Bulkachuwa, former Senator of Bauchi North, during a Senate session in June 2023. Bulkachuwa had acknowledged helping colleagues obtain favorable judgments through his wife, Zainab Bulkachuwa, while she served as President of the Court of Appeal.
