Obi arrived at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja at about 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday alongside the senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh.
He was screened by a panel chaired by former Minister of Education, Sam Egwu.
Speaking after the exercise, Egwu said the committee was satisfied with Obi’s performance and confirmed that he met all constitutional and electoral requirements needed to contest the party’s presidential primary.
According to him, Obi provided satisfactory responses to questions raised by members of the screening panel.
“This is to certify that following the screening of the presidential aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), His Excellency Peter Obi, and being satisfied that he has complied with all the requirements of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and all provisions of the Electoral Act, and the satisfactory answers given by him to all the questions from members of the national screening committee, he is hereby cleared to contest in the presidential primaries of the party for the 2027 presidential election on a date to be announced by the party. Congratulations,” Egwu stated.
Following the screening, Obi was presented with an official clearance certificate and the party’s nomination form bearing serial number 001.
Party Extends Deadline For Other Aspirants
Obi had obtained the NDC presidential nomination and expression of interest forms on Sunday, May 17, which was initially the deadline for the collection of forms.
However, the party later extended the deadline for other categories of aspirants until May 24 to allow more interested candidates to obtain forms.
The NDC also announced that the submission of completed nomination forms by screened and cleared aspirants would commence on Wednesday, May 20, and end on May 26.
The party clarified that the extension does not apply to presidential aspirants, stressing that the window for collecting presidential nomination forms has officially closed.
