Eyewitnesses reported that the peaceful procession was abruptly interrupted when police began shooting into the air and using tear gas to scatter the crowd. Many protesters fled the scene, and at least two individuals were arrested. A source confirmed the arrests to SaharaReporters, although the identities of those detained remain unknown.
As of now, the police have not issued an official statement regarding the incident or their use of force during the memorial. The Lekki Tollgate is notably the site of the tragic shooting on October 20, 2020, when security forces opened fire on unarmed protesters.
In October 2020, thousands of young people across Nigeria protested against harassment, killings, and extortion by officers of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The protests culminated at the Lekki Tollgate, resulting in multiple fatalities and severe injuries when the military intervened.
In the aftermath, judicial panels were set up in various states to review the protestersā demands. However, nearly four years later, protest leaders have expressed frustration that many of the panelsā recommendations remain unaddressed.
