In response, the NLC labeled the World Bank’s counsel as an invitation to chaos and an act of cruelty. Speaking to Punch, NLC’s Head of Public Relations, Benson Upah, emphasized that adhering to the recommendations of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund could lead to disaster for Nigeria.

Upah argued that the World Bank does not genuinely prioritize Nigeria’s interests, urging Tinubu to develop a homegrown economic strategy to tackle the nation’s challenges. He remarked, “If their past advice has not benefited us, why would we expect their latest recommendations to do so? It is cruel for the World Bank to ask the Tinubu administration to continue implementing these painful policies.”

He warned, “This advice will not be accepted, and there will be significant repercussions if the Tinubu administration follows it, as the country is currently at a standstill. There is widespread suffering, even within the business sector.”
