Labour Party Calls For Immediate Release Of Southeast Chairman Alex OttiThe Labour Party (LP) has demanded the immediate release of its National Vice Chairman for the South-East, Ceekay Igara, who was reportedly arrested by police. According to Olorunfemi, Igara was taken into custody in Aba while meeting with party leaders, as police surrounded them and arrested him without a warrant. “The leadership of the Labour Party is in shock over this development, especially as it appears to have been ordered by the party’s only sitting governor,” he stated.
The party expressed concerns about Governor Alex Otti, noting, “The same governor we supported during the 2023 governorship election, whose victory we defended, has now turned against us with aggressive actions.”
Olorunfemi emphasized that despite the court affirming Julius Abure’s leadership and validating the Nnewi convention, the party had extended an olive branch to the governor, yet tensions remain. “It’s baffling that he is now working to destabilize the party that supported him when he needed it most. His resort to political intimidation reflects his true nature,” he added, mentioning that the party had been misled by Otti’s earlier conduct.
The Labour Party has called for Igara’s immediate release or, if necessary, his arraignment in court within the legally mandated 24-hour timeframe.
