Former presidential candidate and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has filed a ₦500 million lawsuit against the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Sowore accused the police of violating his fundamental rights by declaring him wanted without any prior invitation, warrant, or charge.

In the suit filed before the Federal High Court in Lagos, Sowore is seeking the enforcement of his rights to dignity, liberty, and freedom of movement as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The case, filed by a team of human rights lawyers led by Tope Temokun, Marshal Abubakar, Inibehe Effiong, and others, follows a public declaration by the Lagos Commissioner of Police on November 3, 2025, listing Sowore as a “wanted person.”

In an affidavit of urgency deposed by Sowore, he stated that the declaration was unlawful and amounted to harassment and intimidation. He maintained that he had not committed any offence nor received any formal invitation from the police before being labeled wanted.

Sowore, describing himself as a law-abiding citizen and pro-democracy activist, said the police action had damaged his reputation and was intended to silence his activism.

He therefore prayed the court to restrain the police and their agents from harassing, intimidating, or arresting him and to set aside the public declaration branding him as a fugitive.

Part of his affidavit read:

“Unless restrained urgently by this Honourable Court, the Respondents will continue to threaten and harass me everywhere I go. I am unaware of any offence committed by me, and if I were invited for any lawful investigation, I would have honoured it.”

Sowore also asked the court for an interim injunction stopping the police from further portraying him as a “wanted person” and to allow substituted service of court documents through the Lagos State Police Command.
