According to a statement issued by the commission through its Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Abdulrahman is recuperating at accommodation provided by his employer after receiving medical treatment.
Reports indicate that the explosion occurred on June 21, 2026, at the Barzan Gas Supply Facility in Ras Laffan, Qatar. Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, confirmed that the incident happened at about 10:30 p.m. local time at a facility operated by Qatar Energy.
At a press briefing held in Doha a day after the incident, Qatar Energy explained that the explosion was accidental, ruling out any act of sabotage or hostile attack. The company noted that the affected facility had only recently resumed operations following a scheduled shutdown that began in December 2025.
Emergency response teams from Qatar Energy and the Qatar Civil Defence swiftly intervened to contain the fire, preventing the situation from escalating further.
Official reports revealed that 66 people sustained injuries in the explosion, including citizens of Qatar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, India and Nepal. NiDCOM, however, stated that none of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries.
Reacting to Abdulrahman’s recovery, NiDCOM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed relief over his discharge from hospital while extending her sympathy to other victims who remain under medical care.
She said the commission was pleased that the Nigerian had been discharged and was recovering safely, adding that her thoughts and prayers remain with all those still receiving treatment.
Dabiri-Erewa also urged Qatar Energy to continue providing adequate medical and welfare support for Abdulrahman and every worker affected by the explosion until they fully recover.
The commission further commended Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, for his swift intervention and consistent monitoring of Abdulrahman’s condition following the incident, describing his actions as a reflection of the quality consular support Nigerians living abroad deserve.
