While extending his condolences to the widow, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the Buhari family, and the people of Katsina State, Tinubu ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast across the country for seven days as a sign of national mourning.
Reacting to the news of Buhari’s passing in London at the age of 82, Tinubu described the late president as a devoted patriot, courageous soldier, and principled statesman whose life was defined by service, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria.
“President Buhari was a man of honour and discipline who served Nigeria both as military head of state (1984–1985) and as a democratically elected president (2015–2023),” Tinubu noted.
He praised Buhari’s efforts in promoting national unity, fighting corruption, and prioritizing the country’s interest above personal gain, especially during difficult times.
“I’ve been in close contact with his wife, Aisha. My thoughts and prayers are with her, their children, the entire family, and the good people of Daura and Katsina State,” he said.
“As a mark of respect, all flags nationwide will fly at half-staff for seven days starting today. Buhari will receive full state honours in appreciation of his legacy.”
“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest in Al-Jannah Firdaus. May his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with integrity, courage, and selflessness,” the statement concluded.
