Arriving in Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia on Saturday as part of his official Caribbean and South American tour, the Nigerian leader announced Nigeria’s readiness to lift visa requirements for OECS officials carrying diplomatic and official passports.
“Nigeria is prepared to pursue a visa waiver arrangement for OECS officials with diplomatic and official passports,” Tinubu said.
He urged OECS countries, including Saint Lucia, to consider a reciprocal visa-free policy, emphasizing that such measures would enhance official interactions and strengthen regional ties.
President Tinubu also called for increased academic partnerships, particularly in areas such as education, maritime research, and innovation. He encouraged collaborations between Nigerian institutions and OECS maritime universities to promote long-term academic exchanges and joint initiatives in sustainable agriculture, disease prevention, and climate change resilience.
Recognizing the shared vulnerability of both regions to environmental challenges such as droughts and floods, Tinubu underscored the urgency of joint efforts in climate adaptation and disaster preparedness.
“Cooperation on climate adaptation is vital. We must work together to protect our people and economies from shared threats,” he stated.
He further highlighted the importance of fostering cultural ties and promoting youth exchange programs as a means of deepening mutual understanding and unity between Nigeria and OECS nations.
