Cooking gas, also known as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), has experienced price volatility due to factors such as global energy market shifts, currency devaluation, and domestic supply constraints.
The festive season, characterized by heightened household consumption, has driven up demand, worsening the instability.
In January, the average cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas was approximately ₦8,000. However, prices surged dramatically as the year progressed, climbing to ₦12,000–₦15,000 by mid-year.
These increases were largely attributed to the weakening of the naira, rising international gas prices, and inadequate local production. Despite Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves, the country remains heavily reliant on imports to meet domestic needs.
As December rolls in, prices continue to climb. In major cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder now ranges between ₦16,000 and ₦17,500, with some rural areas reporting even higher prices due to transportation challenges.
Here’s the current price of cooking gas per kilogram:
- 1kg Cooking Gas – ₦1,370
- 3kg Cooking Gas – ₦4,110
- 5kg Cooking Gas – ₦6,850
- 6kg Cooking Gas – ₦8,220
- 10kg Cooking Gas – ₦13,700
- 12.5kg Cooking Gas – ₦17,125
