The UK Metropolitan Police has dismissed PC Shola Balogun, a Nigerian-British officer, following an altercation at a birthday party, during which Balogun reportedly bit a colleague.
The incident occurred on April 22, 2022, at the Goals Sports Bar in Bexleyheath, South East London, during a 40th birthday celebration attended by around 70 people. According to witness statements, PC Balogun arrived at the event visibly intoxicated and continued to drink heavily throughout the evening, as corroborated by other officers present.
Around 11:30 p.m., a fellow officer encountered Balogun on a staircase. Balogun allegedly removed the officer’s glasses and dropped them on the floor. When the officer responded amicably, Balogun reportedly escalated the situation by pushing him by the throat and later leaning in to bite him on the right cheek.
PC Balogun denied the accusations of pushing and biting his colleague, but the disciplinary panel, relying on witness statements and medical evidence of a suspected bite mark, found Balogun’s account unconvincing. The panel ruled that the severity of Balogun’s behavior justified immediate dismissal rather than a final written warning.
The dismissal was deemed necessary by the panel, which concluded, “On the balance of probabilities, PC Balogun assaulted his colleague by biting him while off duty at Goals Bexleyheath on April 22, 2022.”
