Burkina Faso Launches Passport Edition Without ECOWAS Branding

ECOWAS has repeatedly called for a return to constitutional governance as a condition for lifting these sanctions. At a press briefing on Tuesday, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, confirmed the change: “The new passport does not feature the ECOWAS logo or mention the organization. Burkina Faso’s withdrawal from ECOWAS, decided in January, is now being reflected in our passports.”

This move highlights Burkina Faso’s increasing distance from ECOWAS. The three nations—Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—have criticized ECOWAS for allegedly prioritizing self-interest over pan-African unity. The bloc has expressed concerns that these withdrawals could impact the common market and freedom of movement for the region’s 400 million inhabitants.

Despite these tensions, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, the current ECOWAS chairman, and his team are exploring diplomatic solutions to reintegrate Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali. Tinubu has assured that ECOWAS remains open and welcoming to these nations despite the current disputes.

According to the Henley Passport Index, Burkina Faso’s passport ranks 78th globally, offering visa-free access to 60 destinations, including several ECOWAS member states. It remains to be seen how this change will affect Burkina Faso’s visa agreements within the bloc.
