Obasanjo: ‘I Can Proudly Say I Did Everything Necessary For Nigeria

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has confidently asserted that during his tenure, he fulfilled all his responsibilities and effectively managed Nigeria’s affairs. Speaking at a recent lecture in Lagos, Obasanjo, who served from 1999 to 2007, remarked:

“During my presidency, I can proudly say that I did everything necessary for Nigeria. When I assumed office, the country had N3.7 billion in reserves and was spending N3.5 billion annually just to service debt. To address this, I sought debt relief, which we successfully achieved. We not only received relief from a significant debt of N3.36 billion but also managed to reduce it to N3.6 billion. By the time I left office, we had accumulated over N25 billion in what we termed excess crude, funds saved beyond the budget, and a reserve exceeding N45 billion.”

Obasanjo also emphasized that while Nigeria is a complex nation, it is not unmanageable.

“Nigeria is undoubtedly a complex country,” he stated. “However, with honesty towards oneself, the nation, and God, it is certainly not difficult to manage.”
