Cardoso Comments On Depleted Foreign Reserves: CBN’s Naira Defense Strategy In Question

Olayemi Cardoso, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has clarified that the apex bank is not utilizing the nation’s foreign reserves to defend the Naira. His statement comes amidst a decline in Nigeria’s foreign reserves coinciding with a significant appreciation of the Naira in the forex market.

There have been suggestions that the CBN intervened in the market by injecting forex to alleviate demand pressure and stabilize the local currency’s value. However, addressing concerns at the ongoing Spring Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank, Cardoso emphasized that the CBN’s objective is not Naira defense but rather fostering a dynamic forex market to enable the Naira to function autonomously.

Cardoso explained that the reduction in foreign reserves was not aimed at defending the Naira but rather fulfilling other financial obligations. He stated, “Our intention is not to defend the Naira. Our policy aligns with fostering an independent performance of the Naira within a vibrant forex market.”

He further elaborated on the need to support activities such as obtaining forex for essential purposes like education and travel. Cardoso highlighted that the recent shift in reserves was primarily for fulfilling obligations rather than Naira defense.

Additionally, Cardoso mentioned the collaboration between the CBN and fiscal authorities, indicating that issues like Ways and Means financing are no longer significant concerns. He underscored the importance of a coordinated effort between monetary and fiscal policies to address economic challenges effectively.

In a bid to instill confidence in the Nigerian currency, Cardoso emphasized the adoption of orthodox central banking practices. This approach aims to stabilize the currency and enhance trust in its value among stakeholders.

Overall, Cardoso’s remarks underscore the CBN’s commitment to maintaining a balanced approach towards managing the Naira’s value and promoting a resilient forex market, in collaboration with fiscal authorities.
