In the continually unfolding political drama of Edo state, another episode has gripped public attention. Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu found himself at the center of a startling scene when Department of State Services (DSS) officers restrained him from approaching Governor Godwin Obaseki during a recent state event.

The background to this tension-filled episode is rife with controversy. Philip Shaibu and Governor Obaseki’s relationship has been on the rocks due to a looming impeachment issue. Adding more fuel to the fire, Shaibu was recently embroiled in accusations of theft involving a watch worth over two hundred million naira from a top APC chieftain in Edo. Further allegations surfaced, claiming Shaibu harassed owners of several filling stations.

As if the state’s political theatre wasn’t already brimming with tension, Shaibu, after his notable absence at the Bendel’s game in Ogbemudia stadium, was observed at an event alongside Governor Obaseki. The event quickly turned heads, not for its intended purpose but for the visible rift between the state’s top leaders.

Recent images and details emerging from Edo State’s 32nd prayer session have provided a vivid depiction of the escalating tensions between the state’s leadership figures. At the event, which had occurred a while ago, the atmosphere was palpable with discord, as DSS security personnel intervened to prevent Deputy Governor Shaibu from approaching Governor Obaseki.

In what many attendees described as a blatant display of disregard, there was no seat reserved for the Deputy Governor during the event. As a result, Shaibu found himself in the unexpected position of having to source a chair from another aisle of the hall.

While the prayer session’s primary aim was to mark Edo State’s notable 32nd anniversary, it became apparent that the underlying political tensions took center stage. Eyewitnesses reported that throughout the event, all of Shaibu’s attempts to communicate or even exchange basic pleasantries with Governor Obaseki were systematically thwarted.

Supporting these claims, photos circulating from the event starkly illustrate the Deputy Governor being actively blocked, essentially isolating him from the state’s chief executive.
