In a post on Detriot Catholic, Julia Dezelski, associate director for marriage and family life at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat of Laity, Marriage, Family Life, and Youth, highlighted the significance of Lent as a reminder of Christ’s ultimate act of love—the suffering and death on the cross. She emphasized that love, epitomized by the cross, entails sacrifice and giving oneself to others.
Father Dustin Dought, executive director of the USCCB’s Secretariat of Divine Worship, noted that the dual celebration on the same day provides a deeper understanding of each. He suggested that Valentine’s Day falling on Ash Wednesday underscores the idea of penance as an expression of love, applicable even to couples.
However, he clarified that Ash Wednesday remains paramount, with Valentine’s Day serving to complement rather than overshadow it. The last convergence of the two dates occurred in 2018, and the next occurrence is expected in 2029, marking the final such overlap in the 21st century.
