Liberians participated in a run-off election on November 14, 2023, to select their president for the next six years. The European Union Election Observation Mission in Liberia commended the National Election Commission (NEC) for successfully conducting the first fully Liberian-owned elections.
Following the election, Joseph Boakai assumed the role of Liberia’s new leader, as incumbent President George Weah graciously conceded, marking a peaceful transfer of power in a region that has experienced numerous military coups.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, Yakubu expressed gratitude to NEC-Liberia for dedicating the Workspace to INEC Nigeria’s staff. He recalled INEC’s support during Liberia’s 2017 presidential election, including technical assistance for subsequent Special elections, the 2020 referendum facilitated by ECOWAS, and the implementation of the biometric register in the recent general election.
Highlighting the complexity of election management, Yakubu stressed the importance of inter-Electoral Management Body (EMB) collaboration, urging prioritization of peer support amidst limited resources and rising election costs.
The Chairperson of NEC Liberia, Davidetta Lansanah, acknowledged INEC Nigeria and Prof. Yakubu’s pivotal technical support in establishing the Workspace and enhancing Liberia’s electoral process. She expressed NEC Liberia’s gratitude for their contributions to sustaining Liberia’s democratic journey.
Lansanah recalled Yakubu’s role as the President of the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions, noting his advocacy for resource-sharing among regional EMBs. She commended Yakubu’s efforts, resulting in Liberia’s election as the First Vice President of ECONEC in 2021, and thanked him for consistently supporting NEC-Liberia in various regional initiatives.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Liberia, Christine Umutoni; Manir Ibrahim, Charge d’affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Liberia; and the Representative of the Liberian Bar Association. Members of the Board of Commissioners, senior officials, and well-wishers of NEC Liberia were also present at the occasion.
