Speaking during Tuesday’s plenary, Doguwa demanded that parliamentary activities be suspended, insisting that insecurity has crippled daily life across the country. In a video shared by TV Platinum, the lawmaker lamented that Nigerians can no longer go about their normal routines without fear.
“The country is running in blood and tears,” he said. “Farmers cannot go to the farm. Traders cannot go to the market. Worshippers cannot go to mosques or churches. Then what are you legislating here?”
Doguwa urged the Speaker and his colleagues to take a decisive stand, arguing that if the government cannot protect lives and property, the House must send a strong message.
“If the government is not prepared to do what is right to safeguard our people, I urge this honourable House to rise and pay the supreme cost,” he said, pressing for urgent executive action.
He then proposed a suspension of all parliamentary proceedings, declaring, “Shut this House down and declare an emergency on every legislative matter until the government of the day takes the right steps.”
Doguwa argued that halting sittings would underscore the gravity of the national security crisis, stressing that insecurity affects every constituency, regardless of religion, party or ethnicity. He warned that the worsening situation could derail critical national activities, including future elections, and insisted lawmakers must reevaluate their oversight responsibilities.
“Mr Speaker, we can even declare a legislative emergency. Close the House. Shut it down. Who are you legislating for?” he added.
Speaking on his own constituency, Doguwa described a surge in kidnappings around the Falgore Game Reserve, noting that such incidents have become a daily fear for residents.
He called for stronger collaboration among lawmakers across regions and political divides, saying unified action is needed to confront the security threats facing the nation.
