The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) had earlier pointed to delays by Chinese authorities as the reason for withdrawing the team from the competition, slated for May 10–11, 2025.
In a statement released in Abuja, the Chinese Embassy expressed regret over the team’s inability to participate but maintained that it responded swiftly once it received an official request for assistance from Nigeria’s National Sports Commission.
The embassy clarified: “On April 24, we received a letter dated April 22 from the Nigerian National Sports Commission requesting help with visa processing. We immediately responded, guiding the Commission on the necessary documentation to speed up the application.”
It further stated that the China Visa Application Centre received the completed application materials from the athletes on May 6, and the visas were issued two days later, on May 8, following expedited procedures.
Reaffirming its dedication to strengthening China–Nigeria sports and cultural relations, the embassy highlighted that visa processing is governed by national regulations and requires adequate documentation and time—practices aligned with international norms.
“The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has consistently supported sports and people-to-people exchanges between our countries,” the statement read. “We have always welcomed Nigerian athletes and provided professional, efficient visa services. However, the claims made by the AFN do not reflect the reality of the situation.”
While expressing disappointment that the athletes could not attend the event, the embassy emphasized its ongoing commitment to future collaborations in sports between both nations.
