The state government reported that the local government areas of Yola North, Yola South, Girei, and Fufore are currently experiencing acute watery diarrhea. Thirty samples have been collected and sent to a national reference laboratory for analysis to identify the infection’s cause, while those affected are being isolated at the Infectious Disease Centre within the specialist hospital in Yola.

During a media briefing in Yola, State Health Commissioner Felix Tangwami shared updates on the situation, revealing that over 300 individuals have been hospitalized, with 244 already discharged. Following discussions with key healthcare providers, Tangwami noted that UNICEF health officer Olusheyi Oloshide has confirmed the arrival of cholera vaccines in the state to help control the outbreak.

Initially, reports suggested that the recent cases were acute watery diarrhea rather than cholera, necessitating further confirmation of the outbreak. The state has received cholera vaccines from its partners and is urging the public to remain calm while improving hygiene practices. Tangwami also announced that surveillance officers have been deployed to educate the community on preventing the outbreak from spreading to other local government areas in the state.
