Acting Superintendent Timothy Calman reported that two bodies were discovered at the crash site of a Cessna 182, while the third victim was found approximately a kilometer away in a Jabiru aircraft. Both crash sites were deemed unsalvageable, with the Cessna 182’s wreckage engulfed in flames.

The collision happened in uncontrolled airspace. Calman noted that such incidents, while rare, tend to be catastrophic. Authorities have identified the pilot of the Jabiru but are still working to confirm the identities of the individuals in the Cessna 182. It is believed that the Jabiru took off from Oaks airfield, while the Cessna was traveling from Cessnock to Wollongong.

Footage from the scene showed the wreckage amid forested terrain, complicating the investigation efforts. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is leading the investigation, dispatching a team from Canberra to examine the wreckage and gather evidence.

The ATSB stated that their investigators will document the crash sites, analyze the wreckage, interview witnesses, and collect flight data, maintenance records, and weather information.

“A team of transport safety investigators from the ATSB’s Canberra office, experienced in aircraft operations and maintenance, will deploy to the accident sites to begin gathering evidence. In the coming days, investigators will map the sites, examine the wreckage, and recover any relevant components for further analysis at the ATSB’s technical facilities in Canberra,” the ATSB said in a statement. “If we discover any critical safety issues during our investigation, we will promptly notify relevant parties to implement safety measures.
