According to DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the police spokesperson, the incident occurred around 8:10 p.m. on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the Tactical Squad’s Headquarters. Mba was reportedly leaving the premises after a friendly visit when, under unclear circumstances, the officer discharged his weapon, striking the musician.
Mba was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. His body has since been moved to the mortuary for an autopsy.
Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation, led by the Deputy Commissioner overseeing the State CID, to determine the motives and circumstances surrounding the shooting. He expressed condolences to Mba’s family, friends, and fans, labeling the incident unacceptable and promising disciplinary actions if any wrongdoing is confirmed.
Ndukwe stated, “A male Police Inspector serving in the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad has been arrested and detained for the alleged murder of Okezie Chikezie Mba. The incident occurred around 8:10 p.m. on October 25, 2024, at the Tactical Squad’s Headquarters.
“The musician was leaving after a friendly visit when, for reasons yet to be determined, the officer fired his weapon, hitting him. He was taken to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead. His body has been deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
“The Commissioner has mandated a thorough investigation by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID to ensure prompt and appropriate disciplinary actions against the officer involved. He empathizes with the victim’s family and friends, describing the incident as unacceptable and assuring that those found culpable will be held accountable under the law.”
He urged everyone affected to remain calm and cooperate with authorities to ensure justice is served.
