Colwill Sends Strong Warning To Chelsea After Brentford Humiliation

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has called on his teammates to improve defensively after the club suffered a 3-0 defeat to Brentford in the Premier League on Friday night, September 18.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Brentford maintained their unbeaten start to the season with goals from Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho at the Gtech Community Stadium, a result that moved them above Chelsea into third place in the league table.

Chelsea, meanwhile, dropped to seventh position with seven points, five points behind leaders Arsenal, after extending their winless run in the Premier League to three matches.

The defeat came despite Chelsea making an impressive start to the campaign under manager Xabi Alonso, having scored 19 goals in their opening four league matches. However, the absence of Joao Pedro through a knee injury appeared to affect their attacking threat, while Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers struggled to make a significant impact against Brentford.

Alonso made four changes to his starting lineup for the encounter, including handing Jordan Henderson his first Chelsea start against his former club. Chelsea endured a relatively quiet first half before Brentford stepped up their performance after the break and exposed weaknesses in the visitors’ defence.

Colwill admitted that Chelsea had plenty to work on during the upcoming international break, particularly their defending from set pieces and their response to counter-attacks.

“It was tough. Maybe we overexposed ourselves [at 1-0 down], and they hit us on the counter-attack, which they’re so good at,” Colwill said.

The defender acknowledged that Chelsea were not good enough after the interval and said the squad must take responsibility for improving their overall performance.

“Second half we weren’t good enough. We’ve got a lot to work on over the international break. Maybe at times we’ve been bullied [at set-pieces] and we have to improve at that,” he added.

Colwill also stressed that Chelsea cannot depend solely on their attacking players to rescue the team whenever they encounter difficult situations, insisting that every player must contribute defensively.

“We can’t rely on our front three to pull us out of danger; we all need to help each other. We’ve got a lot of room to improve,” he said.

Chelsea will now have the international break to regroup and address the defensive issues highlighted by their latest setback before returning to Premier League action.
