The Lagos Sector of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has once again emphasized the importance of safe driving, particularly on the recently reopened Third Mainland Bridge, following an accident that occurred on Thursday.
The accident, involving three vehicles, took place on the bridge on the same day it was fully reopened to traffic after undergoing months of partial closure.
Describing the incident as avoidable, the FRSC attributed it to negligence, stating that the individuals installing an information device failed to properly place caution signs to alert other road users of their activities.
Mr. Babatunde Farinloye, the Sector Commander, informed the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos that the lack of concentration among drivers contributed to the collision.
He noted that while there were no injuries, the collision resulted in minor vehicle damage. The first vehicle hit a parked vehicle in the speed lane, followed by another vehicle colliding with the first.
Farinloye urged motorists to drive cautiously and adhere to the 80km per hour speed limit on the bridge. He emphasized the importance of obeying traffic regulations and rules to ensure the safety of all road users.
Additionally, he stressed the significance of using the FRSC Emergency toll-free number 122 and the National Emergency toll-free number 121 in case of accidents or other threats to safety.
Farinloye reiterated the FRSC’s commitment to providing a safe motoring environment and prompt service delivery during emergencies. He highlighted speeding, aggressive driving, distractions, and driving under the influence as critical issues that require collective attention.
The Sector Commander expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and the Minister of Works, Mr. Dave Umahi, for the rehabilitation work on the bridge, which is expected to enhance travel quality.
In conclusion, Farinloye urged continued vigilance and responsible driving habits among motorists to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of all road users.
