Cooking Gas Shock: For 12.5 kg Cylinder—NBS Reveals Price Surge

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed a sharp rise in the average cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, which climbed to ₦21,010.56 in June 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This represents a 1.46% increase from ₦20,709.11 recorded in May 2025 and a significant 33.52% jump when compared to ₦15,736.27 in June 2024.

In its latest market report, the NBS stated:

“The average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of LPG increased by 1.46% month-on-month and by 33.52% year-on-year.”

Delta State recorded the highest average price at ₦23,108.44, followed by Cross River at ₦22,982.89 and Rivers State at ₦22,971.27. In contrast, Yobe State had the lowest average price of ₦19,000, with Niger (₦19,242.48) and Jigawa (₦20,025.94) also among the most affordable.

Regionally, the South-South posted the highest average refill price at ₦22,179.08, followed by the South-East at ₦21,623.86. The South-West recorded the lowest regional average at ₦20,402.42.

The report also highlighted an increase in the cost of refilling a 5kg gas cylinder, which rose to ₦8,323.95 in June—up 1.92% from ₦8,167.43 in May and 19.49% higher than ₦6,966.03 in June 2024.

Delta again topped the list for the highest 5kg refill price at ₦9,243.38, trailed by Cross River (₦9,193.16) and Rivers (₦9,188.51). The lowest prices were found in Oyo (₦7,100), Plateau (₦7,200), and Yobe (₦7,600).

Among regions, the South-South led with an average price of ₦8,871.63, followed by the South-East (₦8,649.55), while the South-West maintained the lowest regional average at ₦7,960.42.

This report comes in the wake of a recent crackdown by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), which shut down 19 unlicensed LPG and category D cooking gas outlets in Delta State, mostly targeting operators dealing in small domestic cylinders.
