Court Affirms Abure’s Leadership Of Labour Party, Dismissing Otti’s ChallengeThe beleaguered National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, expressed his readiness to reconcile with discontented members and party stakeholders on Tuesday. He appealed to Peter Obi, the 2023 LP presidential candidate, to assist in mediating and unifying the party.

Abure’s appeal followed a ruling from the Federal High Court in Abuja, which upheld the legitimacy of the contentious national convention that reaffirmed his leadership and that of the National Working Committee. The court also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize Abure as the rightful leader of the party. The court characterized the March Nnewi convention as constitutional and compliant with Nigeria’s legal framework.

In response to the court’s decision, Abure issued a statement titled “A New Dawn for Labour Party: Victory, Forgiveness, and Unity,” in which he emphasized the need for solidarity and extended an olive branch to his detractors.

“This victory is not just mine; it represents a triumph for justice and democracy. It reaffirms that the rule of law prevails and that our party’s leadership remains legitimate. With the court’s decision, I extend my forgiveness to those who sought to undermine our party and engaged in character attacks and blackmail against me,” Abure declared.

He added, “Forgiveness should be accompanied by repentance and restitution. I genuinely hope that those who have wronged us will reflect on their actions, come forward with a contrite heart, and seek reconciliation with the party.”

Abure continued, “I call upon Peter Obi, our former presidential candidate, to assist in uniting the party. Our doors are open to everyone. In the coming days, we will concentrate on rebuilding our structures, reconnecting with the grassroots, and fostering unity among members. We aim to heal past wounds and emerge stronger than ever.”

This appeal for unity comes amid ongoing internal strife within the Labour Party. Abure has faced opposition from prominent party members and stakeholders who questioned the inclusivity of his re-election at the Nnewi convention.

In July, Obi, alongside Abia State Governor Alex Otti and several other party leaders, formed a 29-member caretaker committee, chaired by former minister Nenadi Usman, to oversee party affairs and organize new elections for executives at various levels.

However, Justice Emeka Nwite’s ruling on Tuesday ordered INEC to validate and recognize Abure’s leadership of the Labour Party. “The plaintiff has successfully proven his case, and I hereby order the defendant to grant the plaintiff’s political party under the leadership of Barrister Julius Abure all rights and privileges accorded to a duly registered political party in Nigeria,” the judge stated.
