Court Postpones Falanas’ Legal Battle Against VDMThe defamation case filed by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Femi Falana and his son, Folarin (also known as Falz), against social critic Vincent Otse, aka Very Dark Man (VDM), could not proceed on November 14 at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja. The case was adjourned until January 23, 2025.
Previously, on October 14, Justice Matthias Dawodu ruled on an ex parte application brought by the Falanas, granting them interim relief. The court recognized their right to protect their reputations and ordered VDM to remove a defamatory video he posted on September 24, which allegedly targeted Femi Falana and his son.
In addition, Justice Dawodu issued a restraining order, barring VDM from publishing, circulating, or commenting on any further defamatory content about the Falanas on his social media accounts, pending the resolution of the case. The judge also directed that all legal processes in the matter be served on VDM through his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju.
The Falanas filed the lawsuit after VDM posted a video on his social media, accusing them of accepting a N10 million bribe from popular personality Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky, to influence the course of justice. They are seeking N500 million each in damages. The Falanas argue that VDM knowingly spread false and unverified statements that were damaging to their reputations.
The father and son also contend that the defamatory content continues to circulate online, perpetuating harm to their reputations as long as the video remains available on VDM’s social media pages.
In response, VDM has filed an application requesting permission to appeal the court’s ruling.
