Wallner, who began his professional career with FC Zurich in 2020, has made over 100 appearances in his career, including stints at clubs Wil and BW Linz. He had joined Linz on a two-year contract in September. Despite his promising career, Wallner explained that his commitment to his Christian faith has led him to reassess his priorities.

In a statement shared by Blau-Weiß Linz, Wallner expressed, “I am a devout Christian, and my faith plays a central role in my life. After reading the Bible and reflecting on my path, I’ve made the personal decision to follow Jesus Christ. A key aspect of this is observing the biblical day of rest, which means I no longer wish to play professionally on Saturdays.”

He further clarified that this was a deeply personal conviction, and while he is not yet part of a church, he felt called to make this life-changing decision. “I want to thank everyone who has supported and accompanied me throughout my football career,” Wallner added.

So far this season, Wallner has made five appearances for Blau-Weiß Linz, with his most recent match being a 1-2 loss to TSV Hartberg at the end of October. He also represented Switzerland’s U21 national team as recently as September, appearing in a 1-2 defeat to Albania.

This decision marks a surprising but deeply personal pivot for Wallner, who steps away from football to focus on his faith and a new chapter in his life.
