Man Found Dead On Gym Tanning Bed Three Days After DisappearingA man was tragically found dead on a tanning bed at a gym three days after his arrival. The body, identified as 39-year-old Derek Sink, was discovered inside a Planet Fitness in Indianapolis on the morning of Monday, November 11. Sink had last been in contact with his family on Friday, November 8, and was reported missing on Sunday, November 10.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The discovery was made after gym-goers noticed a foul odor growing stronger near the tanning rooms. One woman, Elizabeth Len, told WTHR that the scent led to the grim finding. “The tanning bed has a door, I believe, but still, why are we not concerned that the tanning bed has been closed for three days, potentially?” she remarked.

Operating hours for the Planet Fitness on Hardegen Street are from 12 am to 9 pm on Fridays, 7 am to 7 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and 5 am to 12 am on Mondays.

Sink’s aunt revealed that he was wearing an ankle monitor, which indicated he had not left the gym during his stay. Family members also reported finding a needle with his body in the tanning room. They described him as a kind person who had struggled with substance abuse. His relatives are now calling for stricter policies at Planet Fitness, including end-of-day checks and cleaning procedures, to prevent such incidents in the future.

Planet Fitness responded to the tragedy with a statement from their Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, McCall Gosselin. “We were deeply saddened by the passing of one of our members, and the franchise owner is working with local authorities in their investigation,” she said. “At Planet Fitness, we have robust operational brand protocols in place, as the safety and well-being of our members is our top priority. We are working closely with our local franchisee to ensure they are upholding those brand protocols.”

A sign posted at the gym on Monday indicated that “tanning is currently unavailable.” As of Tuesday, November 12, the Marion County Coroner’s Office had not yet determined the cause and manner of Sink’s death. This incident comes nearly three months after the death of a Wells Fargo employee, who was found dead at her cubicle four days after her last check-in, following complaints of a foul odor.
