In a significant ruling on Tuesday, a Federal High Court in Kano declared that the Kano State Public and Anti-Corruption Commission lacks the authority to investigate and prosecute the alleged collection of a Dollar bribe by former governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Justice AM Liman, delivering the long-awaited judgement in the controversial Dollar video clip case, emphasized that the Kano Public and Anti-Corruption Commission does not possess the jurisdiction to handle the case. According to the judge, this matter falls under federal jurisdiction and should be investigated and prosecuted by a competent federal anti-graft agency, such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The judge acknowledged that the focus of the judgment was specifically on the powers of the Kano State Anti-Corruption Commission and whether it could investigate the case, despite its federal implications. He asserted that only an entity established by the National Assembly, like the EFCC, has the authority to prosecute the case. Consequently, the judge directed the Kano State Anti-Corruption Commission to withdraw from the matter.

Following the verdict, Usman Umar Fari, counsel to the Kano State Public and Anti-Corruption Commission, announced the agency’s intention to appeal the judgment.
