The Federal Government has expressed concern over the dwindling wildlife population, emphasizing that it poses a significant threat to the delicate balance of the ecosystem. During the commemoration of the 2024 World Wildlife Day in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, highlighted the necessity of bridging the gap between humanity and nature.

Lawal emphasized the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to lead initiatives for the protection and conservation of Nigeria’s diverse biodiversity, encompassing wild fauna and flora. The 2024 World Wildlife Day focused on the theme ‘Connecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation.’

The minister underscored the crucial role of technology in safeguarding Nigeria’s valuable wildlife, noting the theme’s emphasis on the transformative power of digital innovation. He pointed out that in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, technological advancements offer unprecedented opportunities to enhance conservation efforts and establish deeper connections between humanity and the natural world.

He emphasized the need to double efforts and leverage technology’s transformative power to strengthen the connection between people and the planet, safeguarding the irreplaceable treasures of the natural world.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Mahmud Kambari, echoed Lawal’s sentiments, stressing the critical role of wildlife in maintaining the delicate balance of ecosystems and sustaining life on Earth. Kambari acknowledged the various threats facing wildlife, including wildlife trade, poaching, habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change, all contributing to the decline in wildlife population and posing a threat to the ecosystem’s delicate balance.
