The meeting, hosted by Governor Seyi Makinde, culminated in a communique signed by Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum. Below are the key resolutions from the gathering:
-
Merger Speculations: Amid growing nationwide speculations regarding potential mergers or coalitions, the Forum firmly stated that the PDP will not participate in any coalition or merger. However, the party remains open to welcoming individuals, groups, or parties willing to join its ranks in the mission to reclaim power and restore credible leadership in 2027.
-
National Secretary Dispute: Reaffirming its earlier position taken in Asaba concerning the National Secretary role, the Forum, in light of the recent Supreme Court ruling, recommended that the Deputy National Secretary should act in that capacity temporarily. This will remain so until a substantive National Secretary is nominated and ratified from the South East Zone and approved by the National Executive Committee (NEC) at its next session.
-
Democracy & Rule of Law: Emphasizing the need to safeguard Nigeria’s constitutional democracy, the Forum resolved to seek a definitive ruling from the Supreme Court on the legal framework surrounding the declaration of a state of emergency in any state. The governors also expressed strong solidarity with Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, condemning the political turmoil in the state and vowing to stand firmly by him.
-
Insecurity Concerns: The Forum voiced deep concern over the deteriorating security situation across several states, including Borno, Plateau, Katsina, and Edo. It called for an urgent review of current strategies and advocated for a bottom-up approach that empowers sub-national entities to effectively respond to security threats. Additionally, the governors condemned recent attacks in Plateau State and extended condolences to the affected communities.
-
Future PDP Activities: The Forum resolved to work closely with the National Working Committee (NWC) and other party organs to convene a NEC meeting on May 27, 2025. Plans were also announced to establish a Zoning Committee to address party office distributions and to hold an early National Convention in Kano on August 28–30, 2025.
