The Benue State Government is reportedly taking steps to prevent Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from visiting Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Obi, known for his ongoing humanitarian efforts to support victims of violence across the country, had planned a visit to IDP camps in Benue as part of his outreach activities.

His recent trip to Plateau State, where he met with Governor Caleb Mutfwang and visited victims of herdsmen attacks, garnered nationwide attention. However, plans for a similar visit to Benue have allegedly triggered political tensions within the state government.

Sources who spoke to Daily Post disclosed that Obi’s team contacted the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA) through its Executive Secretary, James Iorpuu, to formally notify them and request access to selected IDP camps.

Despite the formal approach, senior government officials reportedly advised Governor Hyacinth Alia against granting permission, raising concerns that the visit might be interpreted as an attempt by former Governor Samuel Ortom—an open supporter of Obi in 2023—to regain political relevance and undermine the current administration.

Political Tensions and Fear of Fallout

Insiders further revealed that broader political calculations played a role in the move to block the visit. Some within the administration fear that allowing Obi’s visit could intensify speculation about Governor Alia’s strained ties with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and fuel rumours about a possible defection from the party amid ongoing internal discord.
