Davido’s Father Claims Government Official Told Him His Power Plant Project Would FailBillionaire businessman Adedeji Adeleke has shared the challenges he faced in obtaining the environmental permit for his over $2 billion power plant project. Adeleke, who is also the father of Afrobeat star Davido, made these remarks while speaking as a layperson from the West-Central Africa Division at the Seventh Day Adventist General Conference Annual Council in Maryland, USA. Reflecting on his faith, he revealed that he prayed fervently, refusing to accept the official’s statement as final.
“I am a businessman in Nigeria involved in the electricity sector,” he explained. “I own a power plant that generates about 15% of Nigeria’s electricity needs, and I’m constructing the largest power plant in the country, set for completion in January 2025. It will have a capacity of 1,250 megawatts.”
Adeleke detailed his experience of encountering difficult government officials during the design phase and how his environmental permit was initially denied. “One official told me point-blank that my project would never succeed. As he spoke, I thought to myself, ‘This man is not God; his words are irrelevant.’”
After leaving that meeting feeling disheartened, he informed his Chinese partners that the project might be delayed. Given the significant investment of time and money already made, he understood their concerns, especially since Afrexim Bank of China was involved, which could lead to bankruptcy for his friend.
Despite the challenges, Adeleke reassured his colleague, emphasizing the power of prayer. Eventually, his Chinese partner traveled to Nigeria to strategize, as he had initially doubted the effectiveness of prayer. Ultimately, their efforts paid off when the then Minister of Power approved the project, recognizing its potential.
