Davido’s Osun Election Comments Spark Presidency’s Reaction: ‘It Wasn’t About The People

The Presidency has described Nigerian singer Davido’s public statements and social media posts during the Osun State governorship election as partisan, arguing that his interventions were motivated by support for his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, rather than concern for the people of the state.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, made the remarks during an interview with Symfoni TV.

Ajayi alleged that Davido actively participated in the election campaign and used his social media platforms to support Adeleke’s bid to retain the governorship.

According to the presidential aide, Davido’s involvement went beyond expressing personal opinions, as he was also part of the campaign structure supporting his uncle.

Ajayi maintained that the singer’s comments should therefore be viewed within the context of partisan political activity rather than as neutral interventions on behalf of Osun residents.

He, however, acknowledged that Nigeria’s democratic environment guarantees freedom of expression, allowing individuals to express their views on social media.

The presidential aide argued that Davido would not have been able to make similar claims without consequences in countries such as Rwanda or Ethiopia, alleging that authorities in those countries would demand evidence for potentially inflammatory statements.

Ajayi warned against making unsubstantiated claims, saying such statements could heighten tensions and potentially incite members of the public to violence.

He stressed that while freedom of speech is protected in a democracy, individuals should exercise responsibility when making public allegations, particularly during politically sensitive periods such as elections.
