According to reports, the detained officers reportedly conducted a raid on Jesse town, the traditional headquarters of Idjerhe Kingdom, on January 30, 2024. During the operation, they allegedly shot Mr. Freeborn Ofeshohwo, known as Cornerstone, the Vigilante Commander, along with two other members identified as Friday Johnson and Enor Young.
In response to public outrage, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, the state commissioner of police, condemned the shooting of the vigilante members. He announced on Friday that the officers involved had been identified and detained in connection with the incident.
In a statement released by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, CP Olufemi assured the people of Idjerhe Kingdom that a thorough investigation into the incident would be conducted. The statement, titled “Re-Protest, Anger As Policemen Shoot Idjerhe Kingdom Vigilante Leaders And Two Others: CP Abaniwonda Olufemi Condemns The Act, Orders The Detention Of The Officers Involved, And SCID To Commence A Full-Scale Investigation,” outlined the commissioner’s commitment to justice in the matter.
The statement further revealed that the Commissioner of Police had directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department, to initiate a full-scale investigation into the incident. The detained officers were identified, and internal disciplinary actions were initiated.
CP Olufemi emphasized the commitment of the command to upholding citizens’ rights and maintaining discipline within the force. He assured the public that the officers involved would face decisive action in accordance with the relevant laws, citing the Police Act and regulations. The commissioner underscored that such misconduct by officers under his command would not be tolerated, emphasizing the need for accountability and serving as a deterrent to others.
