Deputy VC Exposes Bribery Demands By NASS Members During University Oversight VisitsProf. Hassan Ibrahim, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) in Niger State, has alleged that members of the National Assembly demand bribes from universities during oversight visits.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking at the 3rd Annual Lecture of the Bursary Department at the Federal University of Technology (FUT) Minna, which focused on “The Role of Accountants in Enhancing Ethical Financial Practices in the University System,” Ibrahim criticized the interference of politicians in university management. He stated that such interference complicates operations and contributes to corruption within the system.

“Some politicians exploit their oversight roles for personal gain, asking for kickbacks instead of fulfilling their responsibilities. The current reality is that when National Assembly members plan oversight visits to institutions like FUT Minna, the Bursary Department is often pressured to prepare at least N10 million from its limited resources. Often, they won’t even visit but will instead demand that the university bring documents to them in Abuja, further corrupting the system,” Ibrahim explained.

He attributed part of the issue to accountants in these institutions, arguing that they have not adhered to the profession’s fundamental ethical standards in managing resources. He accused them of lacking transparency and accountability, stating, “If we (accountants) did our jobs properly, politicians would not ask for anything. The Bursary Department sometimes tries to cover up issues, which invites bribery demands.”

Ibrahim emphasized the importance of ethical practices, noting that deviation from the five fundamental ethics of accounting could lead to significant problems. He suggested that Nigerian universities should adopt innovative financial management strategies, including diversifying revenue streams, improving financial reporting and transparency, and strengthening internal controls and audit functions.

Additionally, he called for increased private sector participation and investment, as well as capacity building for financial staff.

Representing the VC of FUT Minna, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, Prof. Mohammed Abdullahi stressed the importance of training bursary staff on modern financial systems to enhance their efficiency. Mrs. Hadiza Goje, the Bursar of FUT Minna and Chairperson of the Association of Bursars of Nigerian Universities, pointed out the significant challenges facing Nigerian universities, including inflation and resource constraints. She underscored the vital role of accountants in promoting ethical financial practices for the sustainability and survival of these institutions.
