The sale of Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) has experienced a notable price drop across various locations in Nigeria, attributed to the recent activity of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. Previously priced at around N1,700/litre, diesel is now being sold at approximately N1,350/litre following the refinery’s entry into the market.
Reports indicate that the $20 billion refinery commenced diesel distribution to the domestic market last Wednesday, supplying a minimum of one million litres to each registered oil marketer. Pricing for the product ranged between N1,225/litre and N1,300/litre, depending on the purchase volume.
Additionally, there are expectations that the refinery will commence the release of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to the domestic market by May this year. Abubakar Maigandi, the National President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, confirmed the commencement of diesel sales by the refinery, highlighting the potential impact on pricing.
According to Maigandi, the influx of products from the Dangote refinery is likely to drive down diesel prices significantly. Another oil marketer, Dr. Ralph Arokoyo, affirmed the refinery’s diesel sales to various dealers, noting the positive effect on market dynamics.
The decrease in diesel prices is already observable, with rates dropping to as low as N1,350/litre in certain locations. Arokoyo emphasized the potential for further reductions in the coming weeks as more products from the refinery saturate the market.
Regarding petrol distribution, Arokoyo mentioned that the company has indicated its plans to start releasing petrol between the current period and May, providing optimism for consumers given the widespread usage of PMS in Nigeria.
