Nigeria’s power companies are gearing up for a significant surge in electricity tariffs, potentially reaching N200 ($0.15) per kilowatt-hour, a stark rise from the current N68 rate. Bloomberg news agency has reported on this looming adjustment, highlighting its impact on approximately 15% of the population, accounting for 40% of the nation’s electricity consumption.
This anticipated tariff hike, expected to be implemented within weeks, forms part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to attract fresh investments into the energy sector while mitigating the substantial $2.3 billion annual expenditure on electricity subsidies.
Insiders close to the presidency disclosed that these measures are aimed at fostering financial sustainability within the energy market and enhancing its appeal to potential investors.
Additionally, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) recently announced an upward adjustment in the price of natural gas, which fuels over 70% of the country’s electricity generation. According to Farouk Ahmed, the CEO of NMDPRA, the 2024 base gas price for power sector companies and commercial users is now set at $2.42 per one million British thermal units (MMBtu), a shift from the previous rate of $2.18.
Since the privatization of Nigeria’s generation and distribution sectors in 2013, electricity tariffs have been regulated by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). Bloomberg noted that power firms have struggled to charge enough to cover distribution costs, relying on government subsidies to bridge the gap.
Bayo Onanuga, a spokesperson for the presidency, emphasized the importance of NERC’s forthcoming pronouncement, stating, “The presidency cannot say anything at this stage. Electricity sector is hurting.” This underscores the sector’s urgent need for intervention to address its financial challenges and attract the necessary investments for revitalization.
