According to reports, the incident occurred on Tuesday as Sheinbaum was addressing a group of supporters near the National Palace. Video footage circulating online shows the man approaching the president from behind, attempting to kiss her on the neck and touch her inappropriately.

Sheinbaum immediately recoiled, and members of her security team intervened. The suspect was quickly apprehended by authorities.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Sheinbaum confirmed she would be pressing charges against the man, emphasizing that the incident underscored the broader issue of harassment faced by women in Mexico.

“My view is, if I don’t file a complaint, what will happen to other Mexican women? If they can do this to the president, what will happen to all women in our country?” she asked.

The president revealed that the assailant had allegedly harassed other women at the event, prompting her decision to take legal action. “A line must be drawn,” she declared.

Sheinbaum also reflected on her personal experiences with harassment, saying, “I have experienced it before — when I wasn’t president, when I was a student.”

Women’s rights advocates have condemned the incident as a stark reminder of Mexico’s entrenched culture of machismo, where some men still feel entitled to violate women’s boundaries — even those of the nation’s leader.

Activists noted that the attack highlights ongoing failures in addressing gender-based violence in the country, where femicide remains a severe crisis and an estimated 98 percent of such crimes go unpunished.

Sheinbaum had pledged to combat femicide and gender-based violence during her campaign, but critics say little progress has been made since she assumed office.
