Sowore, who honoured an invitation from the police at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, arrived in the afternoon accompanied by his legal team and supporters.
According to the Take-it-Back Movement, a group affiliated with Sowore, he was held at a police facility within the Federal Capital Territory following his visit.
His detention stems from a letter previously sent to his lawyer, Tope Temokun, by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit, summoning Sowore for questioning. The letter stated that the full details of the petition would be revealed upon his appearance. He was scheduled to be interrogated by DCP Akin Fakorede, head of the IGP’s unit.
Sources cited by Daily Trust revealed that the allegations revolve around forgery and incitement to cause public disorder, though no formal charges have been filed at the time of reporting.
Reacting to the situation, prominent human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju described Sowore’s detention as an abuse of power. He accused IGP Kayode Egbetokun of ordering the arrest due to Sowore’s criticism of his leadership and called on President Bola Tinubu to remove the police chief.
“Egbetokun must go! His actions violate the Police Act 2020 and Regulation 367, which prohibit the use of police powers for personal vendettas,” Adeyanju said.
The Take-it-Back Movement’s National Coordinator, Juwon Sanyaolu, also decried what he termed the persistent harassment and unlawful detention of the RevolutionNow convener. He issued a warning of a nationwide protest in response.
Likewise, AAC’s National Publicity Secretary, Femi Adeyeye, issued a strong statement threatening mass mobilization.
“We’re ready to occupy police formations across Nigeria until Sowore is freed and justice is done,” Adeyeye said.
