Impeached Lagos Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has filed a lawsuit at the Lagos State High Court, demanding his immediate reinstatement.

Court documents obtained by Peoples Gazette reveal that Obasa claims his removal on January 13, 2025, was unlawful.

The lawsuit, filed on February 14, 2025, names the current Speaker, Lasbat Mojisola Meranda, and the Lagos State House of Assembly as defendants.

This legal action follows multiple failed political negotiations between Lagos and Abuja aimed at resolving the leadership standoff. Despite President Bola Tinubu’s directive for Obasa’s reinstatement, the deadlock persists, with lawmakers reportedly fearing potential retaliation from the ousted Speaker if he returns to power.

In his suit, Obasa challenges the legality of the plenary session that led to his impeachment, arguing that it was convened unlawfully during the Assembly’s recess without proper authorization.

The court filing states: “The action challenges the Lagos State House of Assembly’s decision to sit during recess without formally reconvening or granting any individual the authority to do so.”

Obasa asserts that the session violated Sections 36, 90(2)(c), 101, and 311 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), as well as the Lagos State House of Assembly Rules and Standing Orders, specifically Order V Rule 18(2) and Order II Rule 9(i-viii).

The leadership crisis has only intensified despite President Tinubu’s firm stance. Frustrated by the ongoing impasse, Tinubu recently declined a meeting with members of the Lagos APC’s Governance Advisory Council (GAC), accusing them of defying his directive.

However, opposition within the party remains strong. GAC member Muraina Akanbi Taiwo has openly rejected the push for Obasa’s reinstatement, declaring: “Moves to reinstate Mr. Obasa will be resisted. Mr. Tinubu is not God in this state.”
