Drama In The Red Chamber: Senate Demands Discipline Before Natasha Akpoti’s Return

Justice Binta Nyako, in her judgment delivered on Friday, directed the Senate to reinstate the Kogi Central lawmaker, describing her suspension as disproportionate.

Akpoti-Uduaghan had been suspended in March for alleged gross misconduct following a disagreement with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over seating arrangements in the chamber.

In a reaction to the court’s verdict, Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu maintained that the ruling does not strip the Senate of its constitutional authority to discipline its members. He clarified that reinstatement would not happen immediately.

Adaramodu said, “What judgment are we even appealing? The court affirmed that the Senate has the authority to discipline its members. That power remains intact. The senator was found to have acted inappropriately.”

He further revealed that the court instructed Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to undertake certain actions, including making restitution, before the Senate would reconsider her status.

“It’s now up to her. Once she fulfills the court’s directives, including issuing an apology, the Senate will reconvene to assess her response and determine the next steps,” he stated.

Adaramodu concluded by emphasizing that the Senate will only deliberate on her reinstatement after she complies with the court’s ruling.
