As part of what the agency describes as its commitment to accountability and justice, the DG also approved a compensation payment of ₦3 million to the released individuals — Umar Ibrahim, Alhaji Bello Rabiu, and Jaja Sarki Bamo.
According to reliable security insiders who spoke with The Authority Newspaper, a DSS review panel determined that the men had been wrongly arrested. Months of investigation reportedly found no evidence connecting them to the crimes for which they were held.
The source explained that both the release and compensation align with ongoing reforms within the DSS aimed at correcting wrongful arrests and promoting greater diligence among operatives.
One official familiar with the matter praised the DG’s stance:
“The DG DSS is an honourable man who acknowledges mistakes and moves swiftly to correct them. He insists on due process and continues to review cases under the agency’s watch.”
Another insider noted that compensating victims of wrongful detention has become a consistent policy under Ajayi’s leadership, recalling a previous case in which the DG paid double the court-ordered compensation to a businessman who was mistakenly shot years earlier.
“His sense of accountability and humanity is remarkable. These compensations will certainly make officers more attentive and careful in their operations,” the source added.
The three men were originally arrested at the Tunde Idiagbon International Airport in Ilorin, Kwara State, shortly after returning from the Hajj pilgrimage, as part of broader security measures targeting emerging threats.
Upon their release, the men expressed appreciation for how they were treated during detention.
“We were well fed and never abused. The officers attended to our needs, and we cooperated fully throughout the investigation,” Umar Ibrahim said.
The DSS continues to review cases under its jurisdiction, leading to the release of several individuals found innocent, while those with established culpability are being prosecuted.
