The affected areas include Ebonyi, Edda, Ezza South, Ezza North, Ivo, Ishielu, and Ohaukwu.
The union expressed frustration over the non-payment of salaries for over three months in these regions. The announcement was made in a statement by the union’s secretary, Bassey Asuquo, shared with journalists in Abakaliki, the state capital, on Thursday.
The union condemned the inability of local government chairmen to meet their financial obligations to teachers and vowed to continue the strike until their demands are met.
The statement read: “Following our earlier notice to mobilize for industrial action, we have reviewed the performance of local government chairmen regarding the clearance of our members’ salaries.
“As of the close of business on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, we acknowledge that some local government areas have cleared the salaries of our members. However, many others have failed to clear the outstanding salary arrears.
“Consequently, all state and branch officers in the affected local government areas are directed to strictly enforce the strike action, beginning at 12:00 am on Thursday, February 6, 2025. This includes organizing solidarity pickets and ensuring compliance across the affected areas.
“We urge all members to remain resolute and continue their support for the strike.”
As a result, teaching and learning in public schools across the affected local government areas have come to a standstill.
