Economic Challenges Highlighted By Finance Minister After Subsidy RemovalsThe Nigerian Government, represented by Finance Minister Wale Edun, has confirmed the elimination of fuel and foreign exchange subsidy policies. Edun made this announcement during the presentation of the World Bank’s Nigeria Development Update in Abuja on Thursday.

“Fuel and FX subsidies are extinguished,” he stated, emphasizing the financial burden these policies placed on the nation. He revealed that the subsidies had drained the economy, costing over N10 trillion—equivalent to five percent of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

In light of these changes, the minister outlined a new government initiative aimed at tackling unemployment, particularly through housing finance. “This approach is expected to stimulate construction activities and generate significant job opportunities,” Edun explained, noting that the plan will focus on mortgage and housing financing.

Earlier, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Olayemi Cardoso discussed the rationale for the recent half-percent interest rate hike, which now stands at 26.75 percent. He explained that policies to address the Naira crisis and inflation are based on empirical data and necessary measures. “Going forward, our policies and decisions will rely on evidence and data,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed criticized the federal government’s policies, arguing they contribute to the hardships faced by Nigerians. “These policies are not working,” he asserted.

It’s worth noting that in June 2023, the Nigerian government announced the removal of fuel and FX subsidies, leading to significant increases in fuel prices and exchange rates. As of now, fuel prices have risen to N1030 per liter, and the FX rate has surged to N1660.49 from N195 per liter and N461 per dollar in May last year. Additionally, Nigeria’s inflation rate climbed to 32.70 percent in September, up from 20.41 percent in May 2023.
