The Committee of Defence Chiefs will deliberate on the political crisis in Niger and aim to find a resolution within the 7-day ultimatum issued by ECOWAS leadership on Sunday.
The outcome of this meeting could determine whether the situation in Niger stabilizes or escalates tensions further, possibly leading to military action.
The countries represented at the meeting include Nigeria, Benin, Ghana, Togo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, Cote D’Ivoire, Cabo Verde, and Senegal.
ECOWAS had issued the ultimatum during an extraordinary summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, chaired by Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, with the goal of urging the Military junta in Niger to return to the status quo or face potential consequences, including the possibility of military action.
